AUSTIN, TEXAS ― “First let me say that I am extremely proud of the first responders who have helped courageously to save the lives and property of the citizens of West. I thank the neighboring communities for their outpouring of support and for all of their efforts in compiling supplies and aid for those affected by this tragedy.
The activities of last night were mainly comprised of triage and the treatment of patients, while today’s priority has been a search and rescue effort. At this time, I cannot confirm the number of fatalities, however, my thoughts and prayers continue to go out to all of the families affected.
I have been in constant communication with other state and local officials as well as the appropriate state agencies and we are committed to ensuring that the residents of West receive all of the resources that they require. The rebuilding of this community will be a long process but I am confident in the spirit of this city and I stand ready to help in any way possible.”
