Lieutenant Gregory Pickard is also being remembered as a man dedicated to his job. He spent more than half of his life as a Bryan firefighter.

“This is our darkest hour in 142 years this organization has been in existence,” said Bryan Fire Chief Randy McGregor.

Planning funeral arrangements for two of their own; it's an overwhelming and unimaginable reality that's crippled a community; but one that's changed a 142-year-old organization forever.

“The passing of Lt. Eric Wallace completely overwhelmed us, but the passing of Lt. came down upon us again,” McGregor added.

Saturday afternoon…

“We stayed with the family of Lt. Pickard in Galveston, but as the day progressed it became very difficult,” explained McGregor. “But as the news came out of Lt. Pickard's passing, I can't describe to you what went through this organization.”

Fifty-four-year-old Gregory Pickard spent 32-years with the Bryan Fire Department.

“So many things to speak about Lt. Pickard; he was a leader and a role model,” said McGregor. “To me, he was a role model, but also to everyone else in this entire department.

Pickard succumbed to his injuries he sustained after going in to a burning building to save the life of a fallen comrade.

“He was one of those guys in the organizations that everyone felt comfortable talking to,” said McGregor. “One of the best attributes about him was his sense of humor.”

Close friends to the say he was just six-months away from retirement.

The measure of Piccard's impact he leaves behind is incalculable; and his bravery and heroism will always be remembered forever.

“I had the privilege of working with him directly for so many years; and in so many ways, in my professional life as well as my personal life around Greg,” McGregor said while fighting tears. “I feel very blessed to have spent much of my career around him.

A visitation for Lieutenant Pickard will be held this Thursday from 5 to 8 p.m. at Hillier Funeral Home in Bryan.
