Those attempting to get through the entrance of 1755 Navasota Ridge must conquer one thing first: security. And while it may not appear to be the traditional gated community-- for those living inside -- it offers a sense of security and privacy.

"We got a call out here on Navasota Ridge about a victim that had been shot,” said Brazos County Sheriff Chris Kirk Saturday night.

Safety and security were both comprised Sunday night after an argument turned into a colorful scene at the 1700 block of Navasota Ridge.

Brazos County Sheriff Chris Kirk says 27-year old Cassandra Ross and her estranged boyfriend, 42-year-old Daniel Lee Barker, got into an argument Saturday while attending a birthday party. Barker left the party, but returned Sunday night, armed with a loaded shotgun and rifle.

Sheriff Kirk believes Barker waited outside the camp-house in the dark for his target: Cassandra Ross. Just after 9, Ross made her way into the kitchen and that's when Barker reportedly grabbed his shotgun -- firing one round through the kitchen window -- consequently shooting Ross in the back.

“There were three adults inside the home, including Ross’ five-year old daughter,” said Kirk.

Kirk says Barker ran off into the woods, but he didn't make it very far.

“Deputies were searching the area and found another gunshot victim as well,” said Kirk.

Barker was found lying in the woods near the back of the home with what appeared to be a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the chest.

Ross was taken by PHI air ambulance to The College Station Medical Center, meanwhile Barker was driven by ambulance to the same hospital and later transferred by helicopter to Hermann Hospital in Houston.

The scene has since been cleared in the Peach Creek community, but the investigation is far from over. Kirk says charges are pending. Investigators are trying to determine if Barker's injuries were self-inflicted or accidental.
