WACO, Texas - Two Waco police officers rescued a 7-year-old boy after he slipped into the Brazos River during Fourth of July event.
Sgt. W. Patrick Swanton tells the Waco Tribune-Herald that the child was playing on the river walk Friday when he stepped onto some rocks covered in moss, slipped and went under water.
Two police officers were standing nearby. Swanton says Detective Dennis Taylor jumped into the water and dove down to pull the child to the surface and Detective Daniel Harper helped bring him to shore.
Swanton says a resident helped both officers get safely to the shore because of the slippery rocks.
He says the child was taken to a local hospital as a precaution because he inhaled water, but he's expected to be fine.
