Wal-Mart Confirms Plans to Super Size in Bryan

Updated: Wed 11:03 PM, Sep 19, 2012

Not too long after the Texas Hall of Fame closed its doors for good -- talk of the possibility of a Super Wal-Mart quickly surfaced. Wednesday city leaders confirmed the world's largest retailer will be coming to the west side of Bryan.

Regardless of which direction you take on FM 2818 in Bryan, you're confronted with signs. Signs of the inevitable.

“This area is going to be growing here,” said Brazos Valley resident Charles Langham.

Signs that many say go hand-in-hand in a city that's attractive and perpetually prospering.

“It’s all been growing South and East, so it needs to grow West,” Langham added.

Construction and development on the West side of Bryan is picking up speed. Businesses have moved in; and many more are on the way -- including the largest retailer -- in the world.

Wednesday Wal-Mart announced its plans to build a super-sized home near the corner of Harvey Mitchell Parkway and West Villa Maria Road. It's a new neighbor many residents say they cannot wait to meet.

“It will help me out so it will keep me from driving all the way on the other side of town, with traffic and everything,” Langham said.

“I think it would be a good thing to do because instead of having to drive all the way out of your way to go to a different Wal-Mart across town,” said Steven Ruen.

"I don't really shop there, so it doesn't matter whether Wal-Mart comes to town or not," said one traveler.

The city says the retail giant purchased 21 of 50 acres on the property, which also includes a portion of what used to be the Texas Hall of Fame dance hall.

“A lot of people don't want to live on this side of town because there's no grocery store...and if we get a Wal-Mart then we can get home before our ice cream melts,” said Veta Frenzel.

The 150,000 square foot super Wal-Mart facility is slated to be open by early 2014.
