White House: No Agreements; Republican Says There Will Be More Talks

WASHINGTON (AP) The White House says Thursday's meeting between President Barack Obama and House Republican leaders hasn't brought any agreements on extending the debt limit or ending the partial government shutdown.

But House Majority Leader Eric Cantor said after the meeting, "We expect further conversations tonight." He, House Speaker John Boehner and a delegation of House Republicans met for more than an hour with Obama at the White House.

Afterward, the White House issued a statement describing the session as a good one, but adding that "no specific determination was made."

Earlier in the day, Boehner outlined to Republicans a proposal that would leave the shutdown in place while extending the debt limit for several weeks and setting up negotiations with the White House on spending cuts and other issues. A White House spokesman wouldn't rule out signing a short-term extension in the debt limit, even if the shutdown remained in place. But Senate Democratic leader Harry Reid said it wasn't going to happen.

Reid advanced legislation in the Senate to simply raise the debt limit -- a measure that Republicans are likely to block unless he agrees to change it.

Wall Street, meanwhile, welcomed any sign of progress. Stocks had their best day since January, with the Dow rising 323 points.
