Willis- A woman was killed Monday afternoon in Willis in Montgomery County when she reportedly crossed the center line of Highway 75 and struck a pick-up truck owned by the county.
It happened around 3:40 p.m. on Highway 75 just north of Calvary Road.
Witnesses told the Department of Public Safety that 46-year-old Sandra Etheredge of Arkansas was headed southbound on Highway 75 and was swerving and crossing the center line. As she came into a curve, she reportedly crossed the center line almost striking the ditch. Instead, troopers say Etheredge struck a Montgomery County Precinct One Road Crew truck that was northbound on Highway 75.
Etheredge's vehicle caught fire and several witnesses were unable to use fire extinguishers to put it out because of the intensity of the blaze.
The North Montgomery County Fire Department put out the fire, but it was too late. Etheredge was pronounced dead at the scene.
The driver of the pick-up, 30-year-old Gerald Shehane, was taken to Conroe Regional Hospital in stable condition.
The road was closed for about three hours as crews cleaned the accident.
