Woman Escapes Deer Forest House Fire

A fire traps a woman inside her Deer Forest home early Sunday morning, according to Snook fire officials. She was able to escape safely with the assistance from several agencies.

Snook Assistant Fire Chief, Jeff Jakubik said Snook and Somerville Volunteer Firefighters were called to a house fire off County Road 278 just after 2:00 a.m. Sunday. The woman living in the two-story home reportedly called the fire department after she smelled smoke. Jakubik said fire officials had difficulty reaching the home due to large amounts of brush and mud from the recent rains covering the area. When they arrived, there was reportedly heavy black smoke upstairs, where the woman was trapped. Although confused and disoriented, Jakubik said the woman put a wet towel around herself and successfully walked out the front door of the home. Jakubik said several exotic animals; including llamas and possibly an alpaca found on the property were not injured.

Jakubik said responders determined the fire was contained to the kitchen area; however, heavy smoke damage remains throughout the entire home. The exact cause of fire is still under investigation.
