A woman is dead and her husband in critical condition tonight after a possible murder and attempted suicide that occurred around 4:30 p.m. Wednesday in rural Leon County, according to the Leon County Sheriff.

Investigators responded to the scene at a home on FM 977 near the intersection of FM 3.

Officials say the shooting victims' children discovered their parents injured.

The woman was pronounced dead at the scene, with the husband taken by helicopter to a hospital.

Investigators say the couple was in their 80s and had serious medical issues and that's why the husband shot the wife.

"Evidently, there were medical problems and they both appeared as though they were tired of living. It looked like he shot her, and then attempted to take his own life,” said Sheriff Jerry Wakefield with Leon County Sheriff’s Department.

The names of the victims have not been released yet.
