Bell County Cemetery Vandalized Again

Posted: 07/31/2007 - KILLEEN, Texas — Bell County sheriff's deputies will increase patrols near a cemetery that's been vandalized for a second time since Memorial Day weekend. Authorities discovered about 20 headstones and gravesites knocked over or destroyed at the Maxdale Cemetery this week.

Historic Gruene Bridge to be Replaced

Posted: 07/31/2007 - NEW BRAUNFELS, Texas — A nearly century-old bridge spanning the Guadalupe River in Gruene will be replaced, largely because of the danger it poses to tubers floating beneath. The city of New Braunfels and the Texas Transportation Department have been working to replace the old Gruene Bridge for 10 years. But the Texas Historical Commission had opposed demolishing the bridge, which was built in 1909, because of its contribution to Gruene's historic value.

Former Hidalgo County Employee Cleared of Child Sex Charges

Posted: 07/31/2007 - EDINBURG, Texas — A former Hidalgo County district clerk has been found not guilty of child sexual assault charges stemming from allegations that he carried on a sexual relationship with a 15-year-old girl. The jury deliberated more than four hours Monday before acquitting Omar Guerrero, 30, on two counts each of sexual assault of a child, indecency with a child and enticing a child.

Roberts Released From Hospital

Updated: 07/31/2007 - Chief Justice John Roberts has been released from a hospital in Maine. A White House spokesman says the president spoke with the chief justice this morning and Roberts "sounded like he was in great spirits."

Updated: 07/31/2007 - For the second time in a week, an attempted capital murder trial in Madisonville has been postponed. The trial of Floyd Tubbs was supposed to start Monday after being pushed back July 24.

New Law to Make it Easier for Small Businesses to Offer Day Care

Posted: 07/30/2007 - AUSTIN — A new state law will make it easier for small businesses to operate their own onsite child-care centers for the children of employees. Signed into law last month, House Bill 1385 simplifies the day-care licensing process for small businesses and doesn't require them to obtain a commercial license. The new law will apply to companies with fewer than 50 employees and allows workplace care for as many as 12 children.

Four Texas Bandidos Stabbed in Fight with Hells Angels

Posted: 07/30/2007 - EUREKA SPRINGS, Ark. (AP) - Police say four Texans thought to be part of the Bandidos motorcycle gang were stabbed at a gathering of the Hells Angels in Arkansas. Arkansas State Police spokesman Bill Sadler says the fight broke out yesterday afternoon at a hotel in the Eureka Springs area.

Update to Texas Avenue Construction at FM 2818

Posted: 07/30/2007 - Officials with the Texas Department of Transportation say northbound Texas Avenue truck and bus traffic will not be allowed to make left turns at FM 2818 during this latest phase of construction. The work, which started early Monday, is phase one of a project that will occur in two stages. Crews will install concrete pavement for the intersection, and the Texas Avenue northbound and southbound left turn lanes.
