Noriega to Appear Before His Trial Judge

Posted: 08/13/2007 - MIAMI (AP) - Former Panamanian dictator Manuel Noriega wants U.S. officials to send him back to his home country when he finishes his drug trafficking and racketeering sentence next month, but American prosecutors are pushing for him to be extradited to France to face another trial. Noriega is set to appear Monday before Senior U.S. District Judge William Hoeveler, the same jurist who presided over his original trial.

Astronauts Begin Spacewalk

Posted: 08/13/2007 - HOUSTON — Two astronauts began a spacewalk Monday to replace equipment on the international space station as NASA worked feverishly to decide whether the shuttle Endeavour's crew would need to repair a gouge on the ship's belly later this week. A chunk of insulating foam smacked the shuttle during liftoff last week, creating a 3 1/2-inch-long gouge that penetrates all the way through the thermal shielding on the ship's underside.

LA Mayor Calls for Investigation After Thousands Stranded at LAX

Posted: 08/13/2007 - LOS ANGELES (AP) - The mayor of Los Angeles wants an investigation of the weekend computer crash that stranded thousands of people at Los Angeles International Airport. Antonio Villaraigosa calls what happened "troubling and unacceptable." He says Homeland Security Secretary Michael Chertoff should seek changes "to ensure faster and more convenient processing of passengers" in the event of another system failure.

Bedias Woman Charged with False Kidnapping, Sexual Assault Report

Posted: 08/13/2007 - DAVENPORT, Iowa — A Texas woman who told authorities she had been kidnapped and sexually assaulted has been arrested for making a false report, officials said. Alexandra I. Zografos, 19, of Bedias, claimed she was abducted by a man in Orion, Ill., on June 20 and forced to drive to a rural area near Muscatine, where she was assaulted by the man and another man, neither of whom she knew.

Twenty-six-year-old Tonya Smith was captured Sunday in an RV park near Interstate 10 east of Houston after investigators got a tip on her whereabouts.
