Only a few days remain before President and Mrs. Bush leave their Washington D-C home to take up permanent residence in Texas.
Here, they'll be splitting time between their ranch in Crawford and a home in Dallas-- close to the President's soon-to-be library and museum at SMU.
Julie Hays, with our sister station, News 10, got to sit down with the first couple and ask them about their choice of SMU over other strong candidates like Baylor and Texas A&M.
JULIE
Mrs. Bush, it's no secret you are a graduate of SMU. Considering that, did you in fact give a lot of consideration to Baylor's proposal for the Bush library?
MRS. BUSH
We did. We gave a lot of consideration to all the proposals. We knew we wanted the library in Texas. We were interested in each one of the proposals that other schools made and as it turned out, SMU was my school and of course I was interested because of that, but also it's a good location in Dallas and on a metro stop - a DART stop at Mockingbird and it'll be the only Presidential Library on a subway stop and so I think there will be a lot of advantages to being in Dallas on the the SMU campus.
JULIE
Did you think Baylor put together a good bid for that library?
MRS. BUSH
They put together a very good big and we had a lot of friends in Waco and at Baylor and as you know George and I are very supportive of Baylor because our ranch is close to Waco.
Considering it's proximity to Crawford, the couple was asked if Baylor wasn't a better fit.
JULIE
A lot of people thought it should go to Waco. Why not Waco?
BUSH
Well, I can understand why. Look, Baylor is a fabulous university. As a matter of fact, we had a big economic summit at Baylor University right as my presidency got started and and, gosh, they were a wonderful host. Baylor was certainly a strong consideration. I ended up deciding on SMU for a lot of reasons and none of it had to do with Baylor. It was because I like the more central location of SMU and it's a fine campus and fine university. Baylor would have been great, too, but it just didn't work out that way.
Even though the library will be at S-M-U, the Bush's won't be spending all their time in Dallas.
JULIE
Can we expect to see you around Central Texas?
BUSH
I hope so. I'd like to be a contributor, you're right, the entourages were huge and it's just difficult to move around and I hope people understand that, and I'll be a lot freer to do things. I was talking to my friend Robert Blossman, who lives on the property with his wife, Candy, and we were talking about going to watch the Lady Bears play basketball sometime. I'm very fond of the coach and those will be fun things for me to to do.
JULIE
What about your travel? It will be much different now, from Dallas to Waco.
BUSH
I'll be driving.
JULIE
You looking forward to that drive on the interstate?
BUSH
Yeah, me and Barney will be driving down. I'll have plenty to do. I'll be writing a book and I'd like to spend a lot of time in Crawford when I write the book and I'll be working on the institute and so I'll have ample work in the car.
MRS. BUSH
We are thrilled to be coming home and this will be now be a lot more relaxed. We hope we'll have the chance to be with people in a way we haven't over the last eight years because of the security and because of our schedule and not being able to be there very often.
