Has it ever bothered you that Republicans have never been able to unseat Chet Edwards in your home district?

President Bush
Oh, not really. I don't view it that way. You know, he works hard in the district and it's gonna take a candidate that could outwork him if he ever was to lose. No, I never thought of it in those terms. I traveled with him the other day and told him I look forward to writing him letters as a constituent now, but no, he's alright. He's been kind to me.

Julie
What do you envision your ranch being 50 years from now?

President Bush
That's interesting, I really haven't thought about that. Fifty years from now that decision will be made by my girls and their families, but I don't know. In other words, are you suggesting I make that a park? I haven't that thought through.

Julie
You are getting ready to pen a book... what would you title your chapter about Central Texas

Mrs. Bush
Well, I don't know what I would call the title, but maybe it would be "home."

That certainly has been our home over the last eight years, our ranch is where we have gone back to on every holiday... Where other Presidents may go off to a sunny or cool location, in the summer we love to go to the heat of Texas and that's been where we have been every August. So we look forward to retiring there and spending a lot more time there.

Congressman Edwards responded to President Bush's comments Friday:

"I'm very grateful to him for the very gracious comments. President and Mrs. Bush together are two of the most gracious people I've ever known. We have worked respectfully together, and we've respected each other's differences, but we've also worked together on national security and a number of tax cut issues as well. To be able to represent the President of the United States in my district...he always kidded and calls me 'my congressman,' and I say, 'my president.' I look forward to at least on weekends and probably more often than that, having President Bush and Mrs. Bush in our district, and I'll try to give them the best service I possibly can."

I have liked Chet Edwards, and though of him as non-partisan representative. UNTIL he voted with Nancy Pelosi to change rules to amend bills, and called Republicans "Modern day Hoovers"...eventhough he knows the GOP offered up another piece of legislation. He has become Nancy Pelosi's left-wing captain.

It's a shame that others insde the Beltway can't learn from President Bush and Congressman Edwards about being respectful even when you disagree. It's that Texas upbringing!

I liked to hear President Bush's response about Chet Edwards. I am a republic and can't vote a straight ticket because of Chet Edwards. I believe he has done a fantastic job for us in DC and will continue to support him. Glad to know that President Bush and I agree!
