Aggieland Credit Union Awards College Scholarship to Local Bryan Student

Aggieland Credit Union, on August 25, 2010, presented Brenda Guillen with a $1000 scholarship check to attend Texas A&M University for the upcoming fall 2010 semester. Brenda Guillen is a recent Bryan High School graduate and her scholarship will go towards her college tuition and furthering her education. She was chosen as the scholarship winner by a panel of judges and credit union representatives.

Schumann Focus Festival

Sixty-seven students from seventeen studios participated in the Schumann Focus Festival auditions which took place on March 6 and 7 in Bryan Library. The audition judges Ed Kane and Lesley Chapman listened to seventy-two pieces of music written by Robert (and Clara) Schumann. Solo piano music greatly prevailed although there were several pieces performed by ensembles (piano duet; piano and oboe; violin, cello, and piano). Music from Album for the Young alternated with pieces from Scenes from Childhood and more advanced and very well known Schumann’s masterpieces. Auditioning students’ ages varied from young elementary school kids to high school students.

Project Conant Benefit Concert

Project Conant is a group of students and professionals and we are holding a benefit concert on Thursday April 1st at Wolf Pen Creek featuring Granger Smith. All proceeds benefit the Dr. Jeffrey S. Conant Memorial Scholarship Fund.

Voices for Children Announces College Coaches for Children Event

College Coaches for Children will feature TAMU Head Baseball Coach Rob Childress and TAMU Head Softball Coach Jo Evans discussing their expectations for the 2010 season as well as promoting awareness about the need for more Court Appointed Special Advocates (CASA) for abused and neglected children in the Brazos Valley.

College Station forester honored for work in Galveston after Hurricane Ike

Longtime Texas Forest Service forester Pete Smith was honored this week with a Vice Chancellor’s Award in Excellence for his extensive work on trees issues in Galveston following Hurricane Ike. Smith is the agency’s urban forestry partnership coordinator. He has worked for Texas Forest Service for more than two decades. He received the Vice Chancellor’s Award in Excellence-Forester on Monday during the annual Texas AgriLife Conference. “It’s a great honor but bittersweet because it’s the result of an ecological disaster — and a human one. Some people lost all their possessions and were out of their homes for a year,” Smith said, referring to the many Galveston Island residents who were devastated by the massive storm.

Officer Darrel Fikes joins Reserve Unit

On January 14, 2010 at 6:30pm, the Bryan Police Department swore in Darrel Fikes as a Reserve Officer. Fikes is no stranger to law enforcement. Fikes spent over 6 years as a Deputy Constable in Nueces County and hired on with the Bryan Police Department in 1997. Fikes was most recently one of the major crimes Detectives in the Criminal Investigation Division. Fikes left the Police Department to pursue interests outside law enforcement in December 2009. Law enforcement is in Fikes’ blood and he was unable to leave law enforcement altogether. Officer Fikes will continue to serve the City of Bryan as a Reserve Officer within the Bryan Police Department’s Reserve Unit.

Sgt. John Campbell Retirement

On Friday, January 15, 2010, a reception will be held to honor Sgt. John Campbell who retired from the College Station Police Department following 31 years of distinguished service. A reception honoring Sgt. Campbell will be held at the College Station City Council Chambers on Texas Avenue from 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. Sgt. Campbell’s service touched many people in this community and all are invited to come out to honor his service. In August, 1978 John Campbell started working for the City of College Station as a Firefighter. In April of 1979 Campbell moved to the Police Department as one of the first Jailers for CSPD. In January of 1980 Campbell began his duties as a Police Officer. Campbell was promoted to the rank of Sergeant in June of 1984 and served as a Patrol Sergeant until June of 2003 when he was transferred to the Special Services Division where he supervised the department’s School Resource Officers, D.A.R.E Officers and Crime Prevention Officers. In January 2006 Sgt. Campbell returned to the Patrol Division until his retirement in January 2010.

Kuppersmith Officially Recognized as Robotic Thyroid Surgeon

Ronald B. Kuppersmith, MD, FACS of The Texas Institute for Thyroid and Parathyroid Surgery, today successfully performed his 20th robotic thyroid surgery at the College Station Medical Center in College Station, Texas. Crossing this significant threshold distinguishes him as the first surgeon in North America to be recognized by Intuitive Surgical (http://www.davincisurgery.com) for listing as a “Robotic Surgeon” in the area of thyroid surgery. He is believed at this time to have performed the highest volume of robotic thyroid procedures outside of the Republic of Korea. Because of his recognized expertise in thyroid surgery, patients have traveled from around the United States and internationally to consult with him and undergo surgery.

MLK Marrow Drive

Brazos Valley residents join nationwide effort on Martin Luther King Jr. Day of Service to increase African American marrow donors on Be The Match Registry® Brooklyn, N.Y., mother of two with leukemia searching for marrow donor showcases challenges for African American patients in need of transplant. This Martin Luther King Jr. Day of Service, friends and family of Jennifer Jones Austin will host donor registry drives across the United States, including one in Bryan/College Station. The donor registry drives are an effort to raise awareness about the need for more African American marrow donors, and to perhaps find a matching donor for 41-year-old Austin and many other patients like her.

Volunteer donors and partners of the Be the Match Registry in the Central Texas area will be honored by the Scott &White Marrow Donor Program at the Be the Match Hero Bash on Tuesday December 1st at the College Station Hilton at 6:00 p.m.

Coins For Cooper

On Thanksgiving Day, prior to, and following the Texas A&M vs University of Texas football game at Kyle Field, The Texas A&M Corps of Cadets will be holding an incredible fundraiser called “COINS FOR COOPER” to help raise money for three year old Cooper Knight who is waiting for a Modified Multivisceral Transplant to replace his colon and small bowel. Members of the Corps will be collecting money for three hours before the game and for one hour following the game. At half-time, a video of Cooper will be shown on the Jumbo-Tron with a brief story about him. Colonel Byron Stebbins and Cadet Kyle Whalen have worked with me to put this event together.
