It is no secret that Texas A&M’s campus and the surrounding community depend on the contributions of student employees every year. There are actually more student employees than faculty working at Texas A&M. Students also assist in countless offices and businesses throughout the area. Bryan/College Station employers have an opportunity to note these efforts through the 11th Annual Student Employee of the Year recognition.

Each spring, Texas A&M joins with the Bryan and College Station mayors, and regional and national student employment associations to celebrate the contributions and achievements of students who work while attending college. Nora Cargo, associate director of Scholarships & Financial Aid and founder of the Texas A&M National Student Employment Week program said, “Students provide a valuable and much needed workforce in this community. Their service and contributions are countless. It is fitting that we take time to recognize the significance of our Aggie student employees.” National Student Employment Week events, held the second full week in April, include a ceremony to recognize the Student Employees of the Year. Nominations for these awards are being accepted now and the top recipient will be forwarded to the regional competition.

If you are an on or off-campus employer who feels one of your student employees has made a significant contribution in your organization, nominate them for Student Employee of the Year. Roxi Gillis, a 2008 nominee, explains “There are many students who fund their education by working part-time, and this really offers much opportunity to learn and prepare for a full-time job that will come after college. To be nominated as Texas A&M Student Employee of the Year is something to be proud of, it shows that others notice all the hard work you have put into earning a degree.” One student employed on-campus and one employed off-campus will be selected and receive a $2000.00 scholarship sponsored by the Association of Former Students during the Student Employee of the Year awards ceremony on April 14, 2009. In addition, the Class of 56’ Student Employee Endowment Scholarships will be awarded to nominated individuals.

Nominations are scored in three categories: semesters of service, GPR during those semesters, and the written nomination by the employer. The written nomination is used to evaluate the student based on the following criteria: reliability, quality of work, initiative, professionalism, and uniqueness of contribution. Nomination forms and eligibility criteria are available at https://jobsforaggies.tamu.edu under Student Employment Week. Click the link for forms at the top of the page. Nominations and all supporting documents must be received by the Student Employment Office by February 2, 2009 at 5:00 pm.
