The Gulf Coast leg of the Texas Law Enforcement Torch Run will be coming through town on Wednesday, May 20. The group hopes to raise awareness for the Special Olympics program. They will arrive in College Station at the Texas Roadhouse restaurant around 2:20 p.m. At that time, local officers will present the Special Olympics a check for $9,350. The funds were raised during the Tip-a-Cop event at Texas Roadhouse in March.

At 2:40 p.m., the group will run from the Texas Roadhouse parking lot, at 1601 University Drive, to Spring Loop. The group will turn right on Spring Loop and run to Tarrow/East 29th Street. They will then take a right on East 29th and run north to 3991 East 29th Street in Bryan. The group that is running the entire route will leave for a run in Navasota at that time. On Thursday, the group will run in Brenham, Conroe, and Huntsville. On Friday, they will head toward their final destination, The University of Texas at Arlington, where they will be joined by other groups from around the state. The University of Texas at Arlington campus is the site of the Special Olympics State Summer Games, which will start on Friday evening, May 22.

In Texas, the Law Enforcement Torch Run® began in 1985. At its most basic level, the Torch Run is a running event where officers and athletes run the Special Olympics “Flame of Hope” to the Opening Ceremonies of competitions. Special Olympics Texas is a privately funded non-profit organization, providing year-round sports training and athletic competition to 27,610 children and adults with intellectual disabilities in the Lone Star State.
