St. Joseph Health System’s Foundation Scholarship Committee and Board of Directors announced scholarship recipients for the 2009-2010 academic school year. After reviewing applications received from across the Brazos Valley, including Bremond, Bryan, Caldwell, Centerville, College Station, Franklin, Hearne, Madisonville, Navasota, Shiro, and Somerville, the scholarship committee presented almost two dozen scholarships.
A total of $43,300 in scholarship funds were awarded to 23 recipients; 15 Brazos Valley area graduating seniors, 2 St. Joseph employee dependants, and 6 St. Joseph Health System employees seeking to further their medical education. Proceeds were derived from grants, trusts, and individual donations designated for Healthcare Scholarships and made possible by the Emily Palasota Scholarship in Honor of Mary Ellen “Mel” Rothermel, Eugene Edge III Revocable Trust, Lola M. Cone Healthcare Scholarship, the Marshal Verne Ross Foundation, the Peter J. Palasota, III, M.D. Medical Scholarship, Sister M. Gregory Healthcare Education Fund, and Sister Gretchen Kunz Healthcare Scholarship Fund.

The St. Joseph Scholarship Committee read through over 47 applications before making the final selection. This committee is comprised of dedicated members from St. Joseph Foundation Board of Directors, St. Joseph Health System team members, and community volunteers, and includes: Annette Stephney (Chairperson), Mildred Crane, Kay Hensarling, Lynda Gustavus, Vicky Jackson, Rev. Msgr. John McCaffrey, Jan Shay, and Kendall Turton.
