United Way of the Brazos Valley: 2-1-1 Texas Center Receives National Reaccreditation

2-1-1 Texas, the Information and Referral (I&R) service of the United Way of the Brazos Valley, has received national reaccreditation. The approval for the Brazos Valley program was reached after a lengthy application process and the July 28, 2009 site visit. “The accreditation indicates that 2-1-1 Texas/United Way of the Brazos Valley adheres to the highest of standards of professionalism and delivery of I&R services,” said Kay Parker, Vice-President Community Impact, United Way of the Brazos Valley. The 2-1-1 Center was originally accredited in 2003; the accreditation lasts for five years.

2-1-1 is the national abbreviated dialing code that connects people to health and human services, and governmental and educational information. 2-1-1 is part of a state-wide network and national initiative providing a quick, easy-to-remember telephone number that citizens can dial and receive referrals to agencies regarding community resources.

2-1-1 Texas/United Way of the Brazos Valley serves the seven-county Brazos Valley region, serving Brazos, Burleson, Grimes, Leon, Madison, Robertson and Washington Counties. Housing more than 2,600 health and human resources in the Brazos Valley Regional database, trained I&R Specialists are able to provide information 24-hours a day to community members in over 90 languages, including the hearing impaired.

In 2008, 2-1-1 Texas/United Way of the Brazos Valley responded to over 31,000 calls. Thus far in 2009, the 2-1-1 Center seen a 65% increase in call volume.

Additionally, 2-1-1 Texas provides an important role in Governor Rick Perry’s Homeland Security and Emergency Management Plans. In a disaster such as a hurricane or other severe weather, fires, floods or other natural disasters, 2-1-1 Texas will provide information to callers concerning evacuation orders and routes, shelters, points of distribution, re-entry, and disaster clean-up services.

2-1-1 Texas is available to all residents of the Brazos Valley and 100% of Texas citizens. 2-1-1 is active in 46 states and is available to over 240 million Americans.
