Huntsville Memorial Hospital has been recognized as a great place to practice medicine by Medical Economics magazine, which also lists Texas as the best state for doctors.

In a recent cover story titled "America's best places to practice," the magazine also points out that in No. 1 Texas, the "Best town you never heard of" is Huntsville, "surrounded by the Sam Houston National Forest and includes Huntsville Memorial Hospital and Sam Houston State University."

"This is a great distinction that should enhance Huntsville Memorial Hospital's ability to attract even more of the nation's best physicians to practice here," said HMH CEO Sally Nelson. "We strive to continuously improve the quality of medical care at HMH, and I believe our efforts are benefiting our patients as well as the highly dedicated medical professionals in our community."

Among other advancements in just the past year, HMH has added a new pulmonary specialist skilled in sleep medicine and critical care, incorporated the Huntsville Surgery and Imaging Center to improve outpatient needs, added a state-of-the-art Wound Care Center featuring hyperbaric oxygen therapy, CARE-Chemical Addiction Recovery and Education Program, and the Diabetes Intervention and Community Education program in partnership with Sam Houston State University and Agri-Life Extension Agency. HMH also regularly hosts informative events featuring experts on topics important to improving the health of people living in our community.

Reasons Medical Economics cites for Texas' status as the best place to practice medicine include a variety of cities with excellent medical centers, the absence of a state income tax, great compensation, low real estate costs, and tort reform in 2003 that "makes Texas a leader in low cost malpractice liability insurance despite being the second-most populous state in the nation."
