National Seat Check Saturday held in Bryan on Sept. 12th turned out to
be a record-breaking event. Last year we did 84 inspections, this year
the total was 135! Again, this proved to be a great partnership between
the Texas AgriLife Extension Service Passenger Safety Project, Daniel &
Stark Law Firm and the College Station Medical Center. In spite of the
constant rain showers, the event ran smoothly thanks to our excellent
technicians and volunteers. We certainly proved that when the going
gets tough, the tough get going (and get pretty wet, too)! Here are the
statistics from the event:

135 child safety seats inspected
2 children arrived correctly restrained (includes one child that had
been to a previous checkup)
107 new child safety seats were distributed
28 old/unsafe seats were collected
46 children arrived totally unrestrained or inappropriately in safety belts

The proper use of child safety seats reduces the risk of injury and
death, leading to reduced medical costs, avoidance of lost future
earnings, and improved quality of life. These economic benefits are an
estimated $1,974 per child age 0 to 4 and $2,318 per child age 4 to 7
for new seats distributed, and $550 per child for seat misuse with an
assumed 75% continued use. Based on this formula, the total economic
impact for the 141 safety seats inspected on September 12, 2009 is

All the parents were truly grateful for the education they received.
Thank you so much for the generosity of the College Station Medical
Center in giving financial support to this event and for your efforts to
promote child passenger safety in the community year round.
