On Friday, January 15, 2010, a reception will be held to honor Sgt. John Campbell who retired from the College Station Police Department following 31 years of distinguished service. A reception honoring Sgt. Campbell will be held at the College Station City Council Chambers on Texas Avenue from 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. Sgt. Campbell’s service touched many people in this community and all are invited to come out to honor his service.

In August, 1978 John Campbell started working for the City of College Station as a Firefighter. In April of 1979 Campbell moved to the Police Department as one of the first Jailers for CSPD. In January of 1980 Campbell began his duties as a Police Officer. Campbell was promoted to the rank of Sergeant in June of 1984 and served as a Patrol Sergeant until June of 2003 when he was transferred to the Special Services Division where he supervised the department’s School Resource Officers, D.A.R.E Officers and Crime Prevention Officers. In January 2006 Sgt. Campbell returned to the Patrol Division until his retirement in January 2010.

Sgt. Campbell holds a Master Peace Officer Certification with the Texas Commission on Law Enforcement Officers Standards and Education and holds a Bachelor of Science Degree in Administration of Criminal Justice from Mountain State University where he graduated Suma Cum Laude. Sgt. Campbell helped develop the department’s Crisis Intervention Team and served as the team’s first supervisor. He served on the department’s SWAT team for five years and served as the supervisor of the department’s first riot team. Sgt. Campbell developed and served as the supervisor of the department’s first Honor Guard. He served on the Honor Guard for 12 years.

During his time in Special Services, Sgt. Campbell was instrumental in bringing back the annual Christmas toy drive now known as “Blue Santa”. He was instrumental in developing the current School Resource Officer program and coordinated the School Crossing Guards.
Sgt. Campbell will be sorely missed as a mainstay in the department. According to Chief of Police Jeff Capps, “It will be hard to replace the leadership and experience that Sgt. Campbell brings to this department with his 31 years of dedicated service”. Please join Chief Capps and the rest of CSPD in wishing Sgt. Campbell the best in his retirement years.
