You see them when you walk through the hospital doors but you may not know who they are.
The Sunshine Auxiliary is a group of over 65 volunteers that donates its time to greet patients and family members at the College Station Medical Center.
Members work the information desks, the gift shop and direct visitors at the hospital.
Each year, the auxiliary members fundraise to give out thousands of dollars in nursing scholarships to students at Blinn.
This year the Sunshine Auxiliary has decided to do something for the kids in the Brazos Valley.
The auxiliary donated $10,000 towards renovating the pediatric wing of College Station Medical Center.
Each new colorful room has a Disney movie theme and volunteers make sure every child who passes through the doors of the pediatric wing get a teddy bear and hand sewn blanket. Past Auxiliary president, Kris Walker has been pushing the Auxiliary to renovate the pediatric wing for the last three years.
“I remember having a small child in the hospital and it is a terrible feeling,” says Walker. “It doesn’t help when the room is dull and sterile. I envisioned a place where every room has a theme and there are bright colors – a place where the child won’t feel frightened. That makes a big difference for the parents as well.”
Aside from annually donating over 13,000 hours to the hospital, the Sunshine Auxiliary fundraises all year long, with bake sells, an annual Christmas bazaar held at the hospital and the hospital gift shop – which is entirely run by the volunteer group.
Sunshine Auxiliary has given out over $100,000 in healthcare scholarships in the last ten years. They also donate thousands of dollars to local charities such as the American Heart Association and Still Creek Ranch.
