Dr. James I. Durham

Celebration of Life Services for Dr. James I. Durham, 78, of Bryan, will be held at 12 p.m. Saturday, August 4, at Parkway Baptist Church, College Station. Dr. Durham passed away Friday morning July 27, 2012 at his residence in Bryan.




James Ivey Durham was born November 6, 1933 in Alpine, Texas to James J. and Margaret Ann Elliott Durham. He is a veteran of the U.S. Army serving from 1955 until 1957 retiring as a Staff Sgt. He and Marlene Allred married March 3, 1968 in Hereford.




He attended Texas A & M University graduating with a B.S. Degree in Animal Husbandry, a M. S. Degree in Poultry Science, and a PhD. in Biochemistry and Nutrition. Dr. Durham did research as plant physiologist on cotton at Louisiana State University in Baton Rouge, La., and research on sugar cane for U.S. Sugar in Clewiston, Fla.




Dr. Durham was an active member of the American Chemical Society; the American Society of Plant Physiologists and The Gideons International. James was a very active member of Parkway Baptist Church in College Station. Prior to his retirement in 1999, Dr. Durham was an instructor at Blinn College teaching Chemistry and Biology.




He was preceded in death by his parents; one son, John Thomas "Tom" Durham.




Survivors include his wife of 44 years, Marlene Durham of Bryan; one son, James "Jim" Durham and his wife Rita, of Gotha, Fla.; sister, Mary Bartlett and her husband, Doug, of Amarillo; and four grandchildren.




The Family suggests memorials in Dr. Durham's name be made to Gideons International, P.O. Box 2762, College Station, Texas 77841
