Funeral services for George Chmelar, 90, of Caldwell, are set for 2:00 p.m., Tuesday, August 14, 2012, at Strickland Funeral Home in Caldwell, with Chad Chmelar officiating. Interment will follow at Cooks Point Cemetery near Caldwell.




A visitation was held Monday, August 13, 2012, from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m., with a wake service at 7:30 p.m. at Strickland Funeral Home in Caldwell. Mr. Chmelar passed away at his home on August 12, 2012, with his wife of 66 years by his side.




Pallbearers will be Hubert Polansky, Lamar Urbanovsky, Gene Allen Chmelar, Jamie Chmelar, Mike Martinsen, Kenny Ford, Albert Joe Surovik, Kenneth Urbanovsky.




George was born on July 9, 1922 to Frank and Cecelia Chmelar of Caldwell, Texas. He married Lenora (Urbanovsky) on March 2, 1946 in Caldwell.




In September of 1942 George was inducted into the United States Army. He was a member of the 338th Infantry Regiment, the core infantry regiment of the 85th Infantry, otherwise known as the "Custer" Division. His service to our country took him into Terracina, the Arno River, Mount Altuzzo, the Apennines Mountains of Northern Italy and into the Po Valley in 1945.




George was a member of the Caldwell Brethren Church and was a lifelong member of the V.F.W.




George is survived by his wife Lenora of Caldwell; sons and daughters-in-law, Glen and Patsy Chmelar of College Station, George and Susan Chmelar of Bryan; grandchildren, Chad and Joy Chmelar, Christel Chmelar, Tracy and E.B. Ash, Doug and Bobbie Chmelar and seven great grandsons; brothers and sisters-in-law, Frank and Pattie Chmelar and Eugene and Sharon Chmelar.




He was preceded in death by brother; Manuel Chmelar and sister; Alice Calvin.




The family requests that memorials be made to the American Cancer Society , 3207 Briarcrest Dr., Bryan, Texas 77802, www.cancer.org or to Hospice Brazos Valley, 502 West 26th St., Bryan, Texas 77803.




Arrangements are under the care and direction of Strickland Funeral Home of Caldwell.
