Funeral Home: Phillips & Luckey Funeral Home
September 2, 1922 – September 2, 2012

Doris Varner passed away at her home in Caldwell on September 2, 2012, on the date of her 90th Birthday.

Doris was born in rural Burleson County on September 2, 1922, the daughter of Fletcher and Lillian Lunsford. One of ten children, the Lunsfords spent the early years farming in Burleson and surrounding counties. Doris told many interesting stories about her life when none of the roads into or out of Caldwell were paved; and there were no televisions, airplanes, or Internet. Her stories included traveling in wagons over the dirt roads, once riding for a doctor on horseback at night when her father fell seriously ill; and learning to drive in a Model T Ford.

Doris married Edward Akin "Hick" Varner on February 2, 1946, and was married to him for 25 years until his death in 1971. Doris and Hick were active in the Burleson County community. They were active members of First Methodist Church in Caldwell, and raised their four children with a strong Christian foundation. They were among the founders of the Burleson County Saddle Club, and Doris was a member of the Eastern Star. Doris and Ed were active in several businesses over the years, including a dairy farm, an insurance company, and the local Ford dealership, which they sold to their dear friends Bud and Reube Cross in 1961. Doris and Ed were ranchers throughout their marriage, and Doris continued ranching for years after her husband's death. Doris will lovingly be remembered by her family, and many friends for her fun-loving spirit, generosity, and ready helping hand.

Doris was preceded in death by her husband Edward Akin Varner; her son, Edward Allen Varner; her parents, five brothers and three sisters.

She is survived by her daughter, Donna Presnal and son-in-law, Danny of Bryan; daughter, Thanna Magehee of Round Rock; son, Rodney Varner and daughter-in-law Roxanne of Austin. She is also survived by one sister, Louise Addison of Caldwell; nine grandchildren; Matthew Presnal of Linkoping Sweden, Lauren Presnal Freriks of Round Rock, Magin Magehee Gonzales of Round Rock, Rachel Magehee Corum of Round Rock, Lindsey Varner Curington of Liberty Hill, Edward Varner Jr. of Liberty Hill, Max Angelich of Austin, Adam Varner of Chicago, Illinois, and Elizabeth Varner Han of Ann Arbor, Michigan, seven great-grandchildren, two sisters-in-law, Margie Lunsford and Rose Lunsford, and many friends and extended family.

Honorary Pallbearers will be, Johnny Vic Barnett, Jim Cross, Mike Williams, Ed Varner, Adam Varner, Max Angelich, Cesar Gonzales, Greg Freriks, Bruce Addison, and Doug Curington.

A graveside service will be held at 11:00 a.m., Wednesday, September 5, 2012 at the Masonic Cemetery in Caldwell.

The family wishes to thank Cynthia, Cindy, Stacy, Kay, and Hospice of Brazos Valley for their care and attention to their Mother in the past months.

The family requests that Memorials may be made to Hospice of Brazos Valley at 502 W. 26th Street, Bryan, Texas 77803, or to the First Methodist Church of Caldwell in lieu of flowers.
