Lawrence Winkler, 79 of Albany, passed away Tuesday, September 25, 2012 at Hendrick Medical Center in Abilene, Texas.




Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m., Thursday, September 27, with Pastor Chuck Sheppard officiating at the First Assembly of God Church, Albany, Texas. Interment will be at 1 p.m., Friday, September 28th at Moody Leon Cemetery outside of Moody, Texas.




Visitation will be held from 6p.m. to 8p.m., Wednesday, September 26th at First Assembly of God Church, Albany, Texas.




Lawrence Edward Winkler was born at home, May 26, 1933, outside The Grove, Texas to parents, Otto August Winkler and Ella Schmidt Winkler. Mr. Winkler grew up on the Winkler Family Ranch and later graduated from Temple High School. He then continued his education at Texas A&M University where he earned his degree in Animal Husbandry playing football under the legendary Bear Bryant being one of the Junction Boys. Following college, Mr. Winkler served his country and attained a rank of Captain in the United States Army. Later he served in the National Guard.




He married Lora Geraldine "Gerri" Barrett on September 18, 1956 in Lamesa, Texas. The Winklers moved to Albany in 1960 where he worked as the County Extension Agent until he retired in 1986. During his time as a County Extension Agent he served a term as president of Texas County Extension Agents Association. Mr. Winkler served as a member of the First Assembly of God Church and served with the Gideons as well. He also served in numerous civic organizations, which include being a member of Kiwanis Club, Lions Club and the Chamber of Commerce. Mr. Winkler worked with youth through 4-H programs having a positive impact on the lives of many young people. He judged livestock shows across the state and will be remembered by many for his leadership. He was preceded in death by his parents, and five brothers; Milton Winkler, Homer Winkler, Jim Winkler, Bernie Winkler and Gerald Winkler.




Mr. Winkler is survived by his wife of 56 years, Gerri Winkler of Albany; two sons, Larry Winkler and wife Sue of Bryan, David Winkler and wife Margaret of Meridian; ten grandchildren, Anna Conner and husband James, Matthew Winkler, Phyllis Deitz and husband Greg, Catharina Winkler, Sally Winkler, Benjamin Winkler, Lee Ann Winkler, Jonathan Winkler and wife Lindi, Brittany Straach and husband Tyler, Joe Barrett Winkler; five great grandchildren, Ezekiel Conner, Calleigh Conner, Canaan Conner, Chloe Deitz and Caleb Straach.
