September 22, 1924 – November 11, 2012




Mable Rek, 88, of Bryan, passed away in the Hospice Brazos Valley In-Care Patient Facility in Bryan on November 11. A visitation is scheduled for Tuesday, November 13 from 6 to 8 with a rosary to be recited at 7pm at the funeral home. Mass of Christian Burial will be Wednesday, November 14 at 11 am at St. Joseph Catholic Church with Msgr. John McCaffrey officiating. Entombment will be in Msgr. Gleissner Memorial Mausoleum in Mt. Calvary Cemetery. Callaway Jones Funeral Home and Crematory is entrusted to her care.




Mable Rek was born in New Iberia, Louisiana to Armas Paul and Leah Marie Romero Oubre. She was the third of 8 children. She moved to Houston with her sister, Belle, after graduating from Franklin High School and worked at Hughes Bomb Factory. When she and her sister had saved enough money they sent for the rest of the family. She met Joe John Rek, Jr. at a local USO dance and they were married on June 6, 1949 at St. Christopher's Catholic Church. They lived along the east coast during his military career. After retiring from the U.S Coast Guard in 1964 they settled in Bryan, TX. Both retired from Texas A&M University. They shared 60 years of marriage prior to his death in 2009.




Mable enjoyed being with her family especially during the holidays. She was an avid bowler as a member of three different bowling leagues. She was a member of St. Joseph Age Managers, Senior Circle at CS Medical Center, and Golden Medallion with St. Joseph Hospital. Mable spent much of her time gardening and reading books. Her Friday's were set-aside for her Fun on Friday Bowling League.




She is preceded in death by her husband, Joe John and her parents. She is survived by her daughters Joan and husband Taylor "Tubie" Pushee; and Elizabeth Blackburn; her grandchildren, Raymond Garrison and wife Peggy, Amy Salvato and husband Joe Vincent; her greatgrandchildren Joe Jacob Salvato and Luke Anthony Salvato; her brother A. J. Oubre, her sisters, Kathy Platt and Hilda Storey, and other relatives.




Her family kindly asked that memorial donations be 5 given to the Hospice Brazos Valley In-Care PatientFacility. 1600 Joseph Dr., Bryan, TX 77802
