Charles J. "Jim" Newman of Bryan passed away on Tuesday, November 20, 2012 at the age of 87.




Jim is preceded in death by his parents, Louis M. and Lola Mae Newman; his brother, Louis M. Newman, Jr.; and his sister, Henrietta Coleman.




Jim is survived by his wife of 64 years, Frances; his brother, Peter Newman of Richardson; his son and daughter-in-law, Frank and Lou Ann Newman of Sugar Land; his granddaughter, Claire Newman of Houston; nine wonderful nieces, nine outstanding nephews, and a number of fine cousins.




Jim was born and grew up in Falls County, graduating from Chilton High School in 1942. He attended Texas A&M for summer and fall terms before enlisting in the Navy for WWII at the age of 17 in February 1943. Jim volunteered for submarine duty, serving as Quartermaster First Class on the USS Tilefish. He survived four dangerous war patrols in the Pacific theatre. After the war, he returned to A&M on the GI Bill, graduating in 1948. Jim worked in the Waco area as a high school vocational agriculture teacher, general manager of Callan Ranch and as a line driver for Central Freight, moving to Bryan in 1972 and retiring in Bryan in 1991. In retirement, Jim loved staying in touch with old classmates and work friends; but, especially with his brotherhood of WWII submarine sailors and attending many of their reunions. He also enjoyed working with a group of his local friends delivering cars for auto dealers. Jim loved people and had many, many friends. He was one of the kindest and friendliest people ever and was a true member of the Greatest Generation.




A memorial service to celebrate Jim's life well lived will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, December 1, at Covenant Presbyterian Church, 220 Rock Prairie Road in College Station. Reception to follow at the church. Remembrances can be made to Hospice Brazos Valley, 502 W. 26th St., Bryan, TX 77803 or a charity of your choice .
