June 5, 1926 – November 27, 2012

Mary Frances Ater was born in Lubbock, Texas on June 5, 1926, daughter of the late Ruby and Olin Brashear. She left to be with her Heavenly Father on Tuesday, November 27, 2012.

After graduating from McAllen High School, Frances attended Mary Hardin Baylor University and graduated from Texas Tech University. On December 27, 1947 she married the love of her life, John Allen Ater. They had three children and moved frequently throughout Allen's career with Anderson Clayton Company, living in such notable cities as Los Angeles, Scotsdale, Abilene, Houston, and Memphis. Frances always made every move a fun adventure for her family. Following the Ater's 32nd move, Frances and Allen retired to Bryan, Texas in 1992.

Frances was involved in several community organizations in the Bryan/College Station area. She was a member of the Upper Room Sunday School class at First United Methodist Church Bryan, active in the Republican Party of Brazos County, an active alumni with the Kappa Alpha Theta sorority, and a volunteer for the Texas A&M College Republicans and the Bryan ISD HOSTS program. She and Allen (Texas A&M Class Agent, 1947) enjoyed all things related to Texas A&M.

Frances was smart and witty. She loved history, politics, reading, genealogy and travel – from the pyramids in Egypt to the West Texas Sunsets her passion was exploring the world. Her greatest love was God and her family.

She was preceded in death by her parents; and her brother, Olin Brashear Jr.

She is survived by her husband of 65 years, John Allen Ater; son, David Ater and Becky Davis of Denton, Texas; daughter, Suzie Lundgren and her husband Stan of Santa Cruz, Calif.; daughter, Janie Cargill and her husband Tommy of Bryan, Texas; granddaughter, Courtney Dozier and her husband Jarrett of Pearland, Texas; grandson, John Cargill and his wife Sarah of Galveston, Texas; grandson, David Cargill and his wife Janna of Houston, Texas; sister-in-law, Yolanda Brashear of Brownsville, Texas; numerous nieces and nephews; and future great-grandson, James Thomas Cargill.
