Kent Gilcrest, 76, passed away Monday, January 7, 2013 at the Hospice Brazos Valley Inpatient Facility in Bryan. The family will receive friends during a visitation from 5 to 7 p.m., Thursday, January 10 at Callaway-Jones Funeral Home. Funeral services are set for 10 a.m., Friday, January 11, at Callaway-Jones with a live webcast. Interment will follow at Rest-Ever Memorial Park in Bryan. A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m., at Hilltop Lakes Chapel following the burial.
Kent was born August 12, 1936, on a farm outside Hammondsville, Ohio to Laurence Belmont and Nell Hesse Gilcrest. He graduated from Jefferson High School in 1954 and after attending the Ohio State University he was an avid "Buckeye" fan to the very end. Kent received diplomas in Industrial Instrumentation and Mechanical Engineering from International Correspondence Schools.
He was a member of the Tri-State Symphonette of Steubenville, Ohio as a French Horn Player. He was an elder and choir member of Two-Ridges Presbyterian Church in Wintersville, Ohio, and was a past Master of Smithfield Lodge No.182 in Smithfield, Ohio.
After moving from Ohio, Kent was a member and served as a Deacon of the Men's Ensemble of the First Presbyterian Church in Bryan, Texas. He also served as Past President of the Bryan Evening Lions Club. Kent was a former Docent as the George Bush Library.
Kent was also a member of the Hilltop Lakes Chapel, a Stephens Minister and Choir Member. He served as a member of the Hilltop Lakes Lions Club and volunteered at the Still Creek Ranch. He was a member of the Board of Directors of the Hilltop Lakes Water Supply Corp and retired from the Instrument Department of Texas Municipal Power Agency in 2000. In his spare time Kent loved to play Bridge.
He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Laurence, Roger, and Dale Gilcrest; sisters, Carol Johnson, and Dorothy Purkey; and son, Brent Gilcrest.
Survivors include his wife, Janice Gilcrest; sister, Margery Gilcrest-Wolfe; brothers, Philip and Dana Gilcrest; sons, Dana Gilcrest, Robert Toepfer, Randle Toepfer; daughters, Brenda Sellers, Barbara Cunningham, Lina Cupp, Jessie Gilcrest, Licia Kim, Teresa Arrington; sixteen grandchildren and three great grandchildren.
