James Ray "Buddy" Barnett

Buddy Barnett, 82, a lifelong resident of Caldwell, passed away Sunday morning in Bryan. A graveside service is set for 2 p.m. Wednesday, January 23, at the New Tabor Cemetery with Dr. Malcolm Bane officiating. Burial will follow.




The family will be present for visitation Tuesday evening from 5 to 8 p.m. at Phillips & Luckey Funeral Home in Caldwell.




Buddy was born August 8, 1930 in the Hix Community of Burleson County to Reverend Jim and Mae (Warren) Barnett. Buddy married Virginia Vavra on February 14, 1953 in Caldwell. Buddy spent most of his life associated with the cattle industry as an auctioneer, selling veterinary supplies and until recently, a master-weigh man.




All who knew him appreciated his sense of humor and dedication to family and friends. He was an excellent cook known for his BBQ, chili and tamales.




Buddy was preceded in death by his parents, an infant sister, Pauline and grandson, Tyler Bishop.




Survivors include his loving wife, Virginia; two daughters and son-in-law, Vicky Ferguson and husband, Mark of Iola and Karen Bishop of Caldwell; one son, Bo Barnett and wife, Pam, of Galveston; two sisters and one brother and sister-in-law, Edith Barnett and Norma Lee Holt, both of Caldwell, and Don and Nancy Barnett of Lyons; Grandsons Ryan Weldon and wife Celeste, Bruce Barnett, Miles Bishop, and wife, Lindsay, Holden and Kane Bishop; great-granddaughters, Mya Grace Weldon and Korina Bishop.



Pallbearers will be, Ryan Weldon, Bruce Barnett, Miles Bishop, Holden Bishop, Kane Bishop, and Jeff Brown.




In lieu of flowers memorials may be given to Providence Baptist Church Building Fund, C/o Cynthia Kazmir, 2262 CR 120, Caldwell, 77836 or Hospice Brazos Valley, 502 W. 26th St., Bryan, 77803.




Arrangements are under the direction of Phillips & Luckey Funeral Home, Caldwell.
