Funeral Home: Hillier Funeral Home
November 24, 1930 – January 26, 2013
Glorianne Wilson Rice died peacefully, going home to her Lord Jesus Christ on Saturday, January 26, 2013. Visitation will be at Hillier Funeral Home in Bryan on Friday, February 1, from 5-7 p.m. Funeral services will be held on Saturday, February 2, at 10 a.m. at Wheelock Cemetery Chapel.
Glorianne was born November 24, 1930 to John Conlee and Lena Scasta Wilson. She graduated from A&M Consolidated High School in 1948, then attended Baylor University until marrying an Aggie, George Hall Rice, Jr., in 1950. The couple moved to Denver, Colorado where she continued her studies in home economics, receiving a bachelor's degree from University of Denver.
The couple moved to Palo Alto, California when George entered Stanford for his PhD. While there, Glorianne earned her master's degree in education from Stanford, and became an elementary school teacher. In the early 1960's, George was hired as department head for the new Department of Business Management at Texas A&M.
Glorianne continued teaching when they moved back to Aggieland, with stints at Bonham Elementary, St. Michael's Academy, and Mumford School. She earned her PhD in curriculum development from Texas A&M, and embarked on a career in school administration, serving as Curriculum Director first for Buffalo ISD, then Hearne ISD before retiring.
Known to friends as "Glo," she and George were active in First Baptist Church, Bryan, where George was a deacon, and in the Gideons International. She frequently hosted parties for faculty members at the couple's ranch outside town. Along with many hobbies such as knitting and sewing, she often followed George's hobbies including becoming a licensed pilot when the couple owned their own airplane. She was dearly loved by both friends and family and she will be missed by many.
She is survived by her brother, Allen "Skeeter" Wilson of Arvada, Colorado; her daughter, Jennifer Wiginton and son-in-law Barry Wiginton of Bryan; her son, John Rice and daughter-in-law Theresa Rice of Bryan; five grandchildren; one great grandchild; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
The family wishes to extend thanks to the staff of Sherwood Healthcare for their care of Glorianne in recent years. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial donations MAY be made to www.gideons.org
