July 17, 1935 - February 8, 2013
Nita Mayfield, of Bryan, Texas, passed away peacefully on Friday, February 8, 2013, at the age of 77. She was a devoted and caring wife, loving mother, wonderful sister and loyal friend. Funeral arrangements are being handled by Hillier Funeral Home at 2301 East 29th Street in Bryan, Texas. Visitation is scheduled for 5 to 7 p.m. Monday, February 11. Funeral services will be held at the funeral home at 10 a.m. Tuesday, February 12. Her final resting place will be the Mount Pleasant Cemetery in Franklin, Texas.
Nita was born in New Baden, Texas in Robertson County and grew up to become one of the nicest and most beautiful people "inside and out". Everyone thought of her as the "rock" and the person who came to see you when you needed comfort. Nita now rests with her Lord and Savior and has found peace.
Nita was preceded in death by her parents, Granville William Russell, Sr. and Opal Smith Russell; her brother, Travis Russell; and her son, Clifford Wayne Mayfield.
She is survived by husband, Kenneth David Mayfield; brother, Granville William Russell, Jr. and wife, Cassandra Russell; sister, Imogene "Jean" Mooney and husband, Robert T. Mooney; sister, Debbie Thomas and husband, Bob Thomas; step-mother, Carroe Mae Russell; first cousin and close family member, Sherry Matlock; and son, Mark Mayfield and wife, Pamela Mayfield.
The family's thoughts, prayers and grateful appreciation go to her caregivers Ruby Jackson, Olivia Ligues, Kaisha Brown, Debbie Valdez and Mary Louise Hill.
Nita met the love of her life, her sweetheart Kenneth Mayfield, in Bryan and they were married on February 20, 1953 at Northview Baptist Church by Reverend Albert Rambo.
Nita devoted her life to the care and support of her family, church and community. She built her life on the foundation of her faith in Christ, which impacted the lives of her family and friends. She touched the lives of many people with an eternal purpose.
Nita had a working career in Baytown, Texas with Citizens Bank and Trust. She started in the Bookkeeping Department in 1970 and worked her way up until she joined the Board of Directors in 1985. She retired from Citizens Bank after 20 years of devoted service.
Nita and Ken relocated to Bryan in 1990 and enjoyed spending time at the Senior Citizens Activity Center, playing dominoes with friends and actively participating in all the activities at Northview Baptist Church. They also enjoyed traveling to Mountain View, Arkansas to listen to country music and browse antique shops.
Nita always remembered her family time while growing up. Her mom and dad worked together as a team most of their married life. Her parents took time to play volleyball and other games with the kids after a hard day's work. This taught Nita the importance of living a moral life. Nita was always grateful to have parents that cared and were concerned about the future of their children. Nita carried these traits forward when she raised two sons, Clifford and Mark Mayfield.
In lieu of flowers, a memorial donation can be made to Northview Baptist Church 1809 Tabor Road Bryan TX 77803 or the ALS Society.
