Harold was one of nine children born in Dalby Springs, Texas to Cal and Reba Isola Hughes.
A stand-out member of "The Greatest Generation," Harold served his country in World War II, including duties in France and Germany, where he participated in the Battle of the Bulge.
A graduate of Sam Houston State University, Harold was a long-time and often favorite teacher and administrator in Alvin, Texas. He and Georgia enjoyed retirement and treasured friendships in Lufkin then in Bryan in addition to their Alvin friends.
He was an active member of the Baptist Church for 65 years.
He loved his family. His greatest legacy was teaching his son, Jim, how to be a dad, and, in turn, Jim passed the lessons to his sons. He was his daughter, Jan's hero and her husband and children adored him.
Preceded in death by his parents; sister, Mary Anderson; brothers, Arthur Hughes, Travis Hughes and Kenneth Hughes; his sister-in-law, Norma Boudreaux McDonald; and beloved grandson, Austin Calhoun Hughes.
Survivors include his precious wife for almost 65 years, Georgia Boudreaux Hughes; sisters and brother, Wanda Holland, Linda Lockhart, Mona Smith and Charles Hughes; and sister-in-law, Florence Hughes.
He is additionally survived by his son and daughter and their spouses, Jim and Jan Hughes, and Jan and Gary Nowlin; precious grandchildren, Clark and his wife, Kelli, Hughes, Ben Hughes, Michael Nowlin and Callie Nowlin Odom and her husband, Chad Odom. Also survived by adorable great-grandchildren, Camille Hughes, Julia Hughes and Carter Hughes and many nieces, nephews and dear friends. He also leaves his sweet dog, Bailey.
Memorial services will be held at Waldenbrooke Estates, 2410 Memorial Drive, Bryan, TX at 1:00 p.m. Monday, February18th, with a burial service to follow at Oakwood Cemetery in Huntsville, TX at 3:30.
In lieu of flowers, the family would be honored to have donations in Harold's memory made to Hospice Brazos Valley, 502 West 26th Street, Bryan, TX 77803.
To say that he will be missed is an understatement. We are grateful beyond measure for the treasured memories.
In life we loved you dearly; in death we will do the same. It broke our hearts to lose you; you did not go alone, for part of us went with you, the day GOD called you home.
