James Harrison Biehn, 86, passed away on Tuesday, March 5, 2013. A memorial service is planned for 2 p.m. on Thursday, March 14, at Hillier Funeral Home in Bryan.

Life began for Jim in La Feria, Texas on August 23, 1926. He attended school in McAllen, graduating in 1943. Jim attended Edinburg Junior College for a year until he turned 18, and then joined the Navy as an electronics technician working on early radar gear. When WWII ended, he was discharged and returned to school at Texas Tech University.

In May 1950, before he graduated, Jim was awarded a commission as a 2nd Lieutenant in the Army. In June of 1950 the Korean War started. During the Korean War, Jim was a pilot of fixed wing observation planes and the newest military equipment, the helicopter. He flew forward observers so they could direct effective artillery fire. Jim also flew re-supply missions to troops in the field, transported the severely wounded for medical attention, and recovery missions for those killed in action. Jim spent 13 months in Korea before returning home. He was discharged and returned to Texas Tech to complete his industrial engineering degree. Jim continued his education later in life earning a masters in construction management from Texas A&M.

Jim worked in the construction and the engineering field, lectured at Texas A&M University in the Construction Science department, and finished his career at TEEX. He enjoyed many hobbies and activities including reading, working in the yard, flying, snow skiing, jewelry making, building model airplanes, and he built a model ship for Bonham Elementary.

He is survived by his wife of 54 years, Catharina "Rooky" Biehn; his son, John Biehn; his daughter, Mary "Kitty" Biehn; and two granddaughters, Kristin and Kelsie Biehn. Also surviving are his two sisters, Ann Day and Betty Biehn; two nephews and three nieces.
