John Box, 99, of Bryan, passed peacefully into eternal rest on Friday, March 22 at Isle of Watercrest. A visitation will be held from 4-6 p.m. on Monday, March 25th at the funeral home. Cremation and service arrangements are in the care of Callaway-Jones Funeral Home and Crematory.
John was born to Abe and Lela Box in Quinlan, Texas. After high school, John attended Texas A&M, where he was recognized as distinguished undergraduate student (1941-42), and served as cadet captain and company commander (1941-42). He earned a B.S. degree in Agronomy in May 1942. As a commissioned officer upon graduation, he reported for active duty with the U.S. Army in May 1942, eventually serving twenty months in the E.T.O. as a battery officer, 47th Armored Field Artillery, Fifth Armored Division. He was discharged from service in 1954 with the rank of captain.
While stationed in New York, John met the love of his life, Evelyn Potter. They married in 1946 and together raised four children.
John worked from 1946-54 in Lubbock, Texas as an irrigation engineer with the Texas Agricultural Experiment Station. He was in private business in Tyler (1955-1956), then served as an associate agronomist with the Texas Agricultural Extension Service from 1957 until his retirement in 1977.
He is preceded in death by his parents, Abe and Lela Box, and son James Box. He is survived by his wife of 67 years, Evelyn Box; his son John and wife Melinda Box; daughters Carolyn Box and Gail Stanislaw; and grandchildren Alicia Baron, Matthew Box, Robyn Glass, and John David and James Stanislaw.
Memorial contributions may be made to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital in the name of John Box.
