Jo Betty Phelps

March 9, 1937 – April 26, 2013

Jo Betty (Jo) Phelps 76, of Bryan passed away on April 26, 2013 at St Joseph Hospital. Jo was born March 9, 1937 in Jewett, Texas to Morris and Dorothy (Winchester) Singleton. She was married to Charles Phelps, the love of her life, on January 21, 1956. Jo retired from Texas A&M University in 1992 after 32 years of dedicated service where she made lifelong friends that she enjoyed reminiscing about. Most of all "Nan" loved her family, which included 4 kids, 7 grandkids, 2 great-grandkids and her husband of 57 years, that we all know as "Pops". She gave unconditional love to all that came in contact with her. Jo never passed up the opportunity to talk about her family and share a story of wisdom.

Nan took great pride in her kids and grandkids and lived through their achievements. Some of her favorite times were watching the kids play and excel in their individual endeavors. Nan loved deep conversations on the back porch and always offered a sympathetic ear. She somehow knew when there was trouble amongst the troops. Nan always knew just what to say to pick us up with her advice and warm kiss. She had a sense of caring that only she could offer.

Jo Betty is survived by her husband and companion of 57 years, Charles William Phelps (the Chief) and four children, Belinda and husband, Randy Howard of Bryan, William (Bubba) and wife, Carol Phelps of Anna, Kenneth and wife, Patty Phelps of McKinney and Bryan and wife, Missy Phelps of Bryan. She had seven grandkids, Larry and wife, Carrie Phelps, Luke Howard, Christian and husband, Ben Motz, Natalie Phelps, Nicholas Phelps, Brady Phelps, and Bailey Phelps and great-grandkids, Ethan Phelps and Caleigh Phelps.

A visitation with the family will be Sunday, April 28, from 5:00-7:00 p.m. at Hillier Funeral Home, 2301 East 29th Street, Bryan. Funeral services for Jo are scheduled for Monday, April 29, 11:00 a.m. at Central Baptist Church of Bryan, 1991 FM 158. Interment will follow at Bryan City Cemetery.
