Funeral Home: Hillier Funeral Home
August 1, 1921 – May 12, 2013
Virginia was born in Charleston, South Carolina, the only child of George Clarence Smith and Gerta Marie (Peterson) Smith. Known by her family and friends as "Jinny," she and her family moved often due to her father's occupation. Jinny attended some 13 different schools before graduating from Reading High School in Reading, Pennsylvania. The many moves made her very adept at meeting and being comfortable with lots of people, making her the friendly and outgoing person so many remember.
Jinny married William Ralph Hall Jr. on April 18, 1942 in Drexel Hill, Pennsylvania and they had one son, Michael Bishop Hall. Bill was an outstanding homebuilder, so when they escaped the cold and snow of the Philadelphia area in 1975 and moved to St. Croix, U.S. Virgin Islands, Bill built their dream home with much of the design and special features contributed by Jinny. She enjoyed many years in her beautiful home on a hill overlooking the Caribbean. She woke up to views of the ocean every day, and marveled at her good luck 'to live in Paradise,' as she called it. She and Bill enjoyed every day of their life on the island with many good friends and travels worldwide.
In July 2011, Jinny moved to Isle at Watercrest in Bryan to be closer to her son, and once again made friends immediately. Left to cherish her memory is her son, Dr. Michael B. Hall and wife Carolyn of College Station and her granddaughter, Dr. Whitney Hall of Austin, Texas. Nieces and nephews include Dr. Margaret Morley of Arizona, Patricia Griffes of California, Dr. Joseph Morley of New Jersey, Dr. John Morley of Georgia, Maurice Hall of New Mexico and Brad Blakeley of California.
No services are planned locally. A graveside service and interment in St. Croix will be conducted in the fall, where Jinny will be buried next to her husband.
The family suggests memorial contributions be made in Jinny's name to Saint Georges Botanical Garden, 127 Estate Saint George, Frederiksted, V.I. 00840.
