Stella Izell Dewberry Smith, 101, went home to be with her Savior on May 17, 2013. A memorial service will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Monday, May 20, 2013 at Parkway Baptist Church.
Stella was born in Hubbard, Texas on April 29, 1912. She attended public schools in Hubbard and then attended North Texas State University in Denton, Texas. She taught school in a one-room schoolhouse for grades one through eight before she married Crawford William Smith in 1935. Crawford and Bill (Stella's family nickname) lived in and around Hubbard most of their lives, where they owned and operated a small grocery store. They also served as house parents and supervisors for State Schools in Waco and Corsicana, Texas.
Stella was an active member of First Baptist Church in Hubbard where she taught Sunday School for many years. After Crawford's death in 1980, Stella moved to Bryan to be closer her daughter and family. She became a member of Parkway Baptist Church and also taught Sunday School there until she became homebound.
She was a member of The Order of the Eastern Star and enjoyed sewing, cooking, and taking care of her plants. She also cherished her many pets that she had throughout her life. Stella also read the bible in its entirety, twenty-eight times.
Survivors include her daughter and son-in-law, Pat and Delbert Reed of Bryan; granddaughter, Melissa Van Deventer and her husband, Gary, of Liberty, Texas and granddaughter, Becky Bushkuhl and her husband, Mark, of Pearland, Texas; and four great-grandchildren, Morgan Van Deventer, Shelby Van Deventer, Reed Bushkuhl and Cade Bushkuhl.
Her family would like to express appreciation to the staff of Lampstand and to Hospice Brazos Valley, for providing loving care during her final years and days. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in her memory to Parkway Baptist Church or to Hospice Brazos Valley in Bryan.
