Doris Evelyn (Whitfield) Hammons, 92, of Bryan, passed away Saturday, June 15, 2013 at St. Joseph Manor.




Visitation will be from 11:00 a.m. Saturday June 22, 2013 until the time of service at 12:00 noon at Memorial Funeral Chapel in Bryan. Interment will follow at Gause Cemetery.




Doris was born February 1, 1921 in Gause, Texas to William and Birdie Key. She retired from Armco Steel in Houston after 35 years of service. She was an avid bowler and enjoyed spending her time as a quilter and seamstress. She won many awards for her quilts.




She also enjoyed spending time with her family and friends. She was a loving Mother, Grandmother, Great-Grandmother, Sister and Aunt. She was the matriarch of her family and will be greatly missed.




She is preceded in death by her parents; husband Arnold Hammons; daughter Susan Burkett; and brother Ralph Key.




Survivors include her son, Gerald Whitfield and wife Linda; daughter, Patricia Whitfield; grandchildren, Robert Burkett, Carrie Burkett, Cali Currie and husband Matthew, Bryan Whitfield and wife Jayme, Brandi Gomez and husband Patrick, Christopher Nunez and wife Anita; great-grandchildren, Dominic Gomez, Hannah Currie, Vincent Gomez, Payton Roberson, Laynie Whitfield; sister, Norma Jean Kornegay and husband Cecil; niece, Beverly Porterfield and husband Dickie; and nephew, Milton Kornegay and wife Laura; great-nieces, Emilianna Porterfield, Catherine Kornegay; great-nephew, Kevin Kornegay and wife Corinne Kornegay; and great-great-nephews, Noah Kornegay and Shepard Kornegay.
