Funeral services for James Charles "Jimmy" Davenport, 71, a longtime resident of Caldwell, are set for 10:00 a.m. Friday, June 21, 2013 at Strickland Funeral Home Chapel in Somerville with Rev. Corby Brizendine officiating. Interment will follow in Oaklawn Cemetery in Somerville.
Visitation will begin at 6:00 p.m. until 9:00 p.m. with the family present Thursday, June 20, 2013 at the funeral home. Mr. Davenport died Tuesday, June 18, 2013 in the Methodist Hospital in Houston.
Jimmy was born in Houston, Texas, the son of Charlie Byron and Evelyn Olean (Burton) Davenport. He attended Jefferson Davis High School and went on to pass courses at Manpower Education while working two full-time jobs. He was married to Joan Elaine (Lednicky) Davenport on January 11, 1963 in the Fairbanks Baptist Church. He worked as a homebuilder in the construction industry, but was a master craftsman and carpenter who could build anything. He enjoyed driving and taught his daughters and always said "Don't tailgate" along with many other loving instructions on how to drive.
He is preceded in death by his parents. Survivors include his wife of 50 years, Joan Elaine Davenport of Caldwell; his daughters and sons-in-law, Tina Marie and Kirk Nelson Weightman of Houston and Gina Leigh Davenport-Hilton and her husband, Wendall Edwin of Cypress; his sisters and brothers-in-law, Dolly and Anthony Vindett of Cypress, Deborah and Bill James of Nacogdoches, Carolyn and Rodd Smith of Tomball, Pamela Davenport of Houston and Jackie Neeley of Houston; sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law, Sandra and Larry Landrum of Lyons, Bubba and Sheryl Lednicky of Lyons and Julie Hruska of Lyons; grandchildren Taylor Laine Marie Weightman of Houston, Sydney Grace Hilton and Baleigh Faith Hilton, both of Cypress; his father-in-law and mother-in-law, Clem and Dorothy Lednicky of Lyons; along with numerous nieces, nephews and other relatives.
Family members have requested that memorials be made to First Baptist Church of Somerville.
