Dr. Dexter Gabbard, 86, of Katy, Texas, passed away on Friday, June 14, 2013 in Katy, Texas. Visitation was held at Lakewood Memorial funeral home in Jackson, Mississippi from 9:30 to 11:00 a.m. Saturday, June 22, followed by a graveside service.




Dexter was born in 1927 in Bryan, Texas, to Letcher and Mildred Gabbard who moved to College Station in the early 1920's where Mr. Gabbard became the Dean of the Department of Agricultural Economics and Rural Sociology at Texas A&M until his retirement in the 1960s and was a member of the first city council in Bryan. Dexter graduated from Texas A&M School of Veterinary Medicine in 1952 and served in the U.S. Navy for two years during WWII. In 1953 he married Evelyn Carmine of Dublin, Georgia and entered private practice in Artesia, New Mexico, where he served on the Artesia City Council and was a member of the Rotary Club, Lions Club and Knife and Fork Club. In 1971 they moved to Jackson, Miss., where he worked for the U.S. Department of Agriculture until his retirement in 1988. In 2000 he married Ruth Kolb Gabbard of Lafayette, La.




He was preceded in death by his wife, Evelyn, in 1986; and his brothers, Dr. James G. Gabbard of Corpus Christi and Dr. Bruce Gabbard of College Station.




Survivors include his wife, Ruth; his two daughters, Frecia Gabbard Johnson of Newport Beach, Calif., Terri Lynn Traylor and her husband, Mike, of Ridgeland, Miss.; four grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren and four step-children and their families.
