A funeral mass to celebrate the life of Raymond Arias, 84, of Somerville, Texas is set for 10:00 a.m. Saturday, June 29, 2013 at St. Ann's Catholic Church in Somerville with Fr. Nock Russell acting as Celebrant. Interment will follow in Oaklawn Cemetery in Somerville.
The rosary will be at 7:00 p.m. with visitation from 6:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m., Friday, June 28, 2013 at St. Ann's Catholic Church in Somerville. Mr. Arias died at his home, surrounded by his loving family, Sunday, June 23, 2013.
Ray, as he was known to almost everyone, was born in National City, California, the son of Frederico Arias and Matilde (Archuleta Arias) Marquez. He retired from Burlington Northern & Santa Fe Railroad as the Assistant Superintendent of the Mechanical Department. He married the love of his life, Mary Louise (Oviedo) Arias, on May 28, 1954.
Ray, a community-oriented citizen, unselfishly volunteered endless hours of his time at St. Ann's Catholic Church. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus, Father Elmendorf Council No. 10309 and a member of the Msgr. Francis D. Urbanovsky 4th Degree Assembly No. 2587. He served his country in the Korean War and was a member of Marion Mays American Legion Post No. 455 of Somerville, and Veterans of Foreign War Post No. 4458.
He is preceded in death by his mother and father, his wife of almost 60 years; his grandson, Michael Joseph Arias; and stepfather, Marcial Marquez.
Survivors include his children, Raymond F. Arias of San Antonio, Joseph and Carla Arias of Chandler, Arizona, Leonard and Sherry Arias of Divide, Colorado, Wil Arias of Houston; Marilyn and John Rosas and Joan and Alex Torres, of Bryan, and Ellen Rodriguez of Kingwood; his brother, Robert Arias of Albuquerque, New Mexico; his grandchildren, Thomas Sanchez, Stephanie Sanchez, Melonica Arias, Frances Arias, Fredrick Arias, Charley Torres, Christopher Torres, Stephen Arias, Gabrielle Arias, Caroline Arias, Brandon Arias, Treavor Arias, Cameron Arias, Garrick Arias, Eric Michael Rodriguez, Jr. and Elise Rodriguez; great-grandchildren, Anthony Sanchez, Austin Sanchez, Sebastian Thompson, Julian Thompson, Kyleigh Garcia, Kali Arias, Gavyn Arias, Aaron Arias, Aubrey Arias and Dominic Araias; his brothers-in-law and their wives, Gabriel and Anna Lopez of Los Lunas, New Mexico, Abram and Jennie Lopez of Albuquerque, New Mexico, and Jesse Lopez of Albuquerque, New Mexico; his sisters-in-law, and their husbands, Frances and Bill Griego of Albuquerque, New Mexico, Maria Sanchez and Roberto Soliz, Lupita and Joe Aranda, Aggie Schaefer, Marie and John Fasano, all of Albuquerque; along with numerous nieces, nephews, and other relatives.
In lieu of flowers, the family has requested that memorial donations be made to St. Ann's Catholic Church: Religious Education Fund, P. O. Box 99, 333 Thornberry Drive, Somerville, Texas 77879.
