July 25, 1946 – June 29, 2013
Lt. Col. (Ret) Henry Van Maeger passed from this life on June 29, 2013 at his home in Bryan, Texas. Van's life was one to be proud of and his legacy is best stated in 2 Timothy 4:7 "I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith."
A celebration of Van's life will be held on Saturday, July 13, 2013 at 4:00 PM in the chapel at Christ United Methodist Church, 4201 State Highway 6 South, College Station, Texas. Burial will be at Arlington National Cemetery, Arlington, VA.
Van was born to Henry G. and Marion Sumner Maeger in Miami, Florida on July 25, 1946. He earned a B.A. in Economics from Virginia Military Institute as well as an M.S. in Management Science from the University of Central Texas. After his commission as a Second Lieutenant in the US Army in 1969 he served in Vietnam. Among his honors were the Bronze Star Medal with Valor, Purple Heart, Meritorious Service Medal, the Vietnam Service Medal with Bronze Service Star, and the Republic of Vietnam Cross of Gallantry with Palm.
Van retired as a Lieutenant Colonel after serving twenty-two years in a career that took him and his family to Hanau, Germany, Seoul, Korea, Mons, Belgium and an ROTC assignment at Virginia Military Institute.
Upon Retirement Van and his wife, Debi, settled in Bryan, Texas where he pursued his love of kayaking, surfing, and outdoor adventure. Most of all, Van cherished being a dad to his sons and grandfather to his five grandchildren. So whether you called him Van, Dad, or Gramps, you knew instinctively that he was a fine man - forthright, honest, and person of good spirit.
The coming days will shorten and golden leaves will fall,
But we shall not forget the man who, hearing the Bugler's call,
Still fought the fight and raced the race, and kept the faith for all.
He will remain in our hearts, a guardian brave and tall.
Van is survived by his wife Debi of 39 years; son: Christopher, wife Janell, and child - Justin of Springfield, Virginia; son: Stu, wife Kate, and children – Emily & Sean of Anchorage, Alaska; son: Will, wife Abby, and children – Hailey & Katelyn of Dickinson, Texas; brother, Brett and wife, Lorrie of Salt Lake City, Utah; brother, Brad of Jacksonville, Florida; brother, Frank and wife, Kathy, of Abbeville, South Carolina; sister, Marilyn Archuleta and husband, Alfonso, of Theresa, New York; sister, Carolyn and husband, David, of Auburn, Alabama; sister, Marlena Maeger of Seattle, Washington.
