Macell Elnora (BurkhalteR) Mangold

Posted: Wed 8:31 AM, Jul 10, 2013
September 15, 1924 - July 4, 2013

Macell Elnora (Burkhalter) Mangold was a beloved wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and dear friend to many. She went home to be with the Lord Thursday, July 4, 2013 at the age of 88.

All services will be held at St. Paul Catholic Church in San Antonio. Visitation will be at 6 p.m. and a 7 p.m. Rosary on Friday, July 12, and Saturday, July 13, visitation at 8 a.m. with Funeral Mass at 9 a.m. Interment will be at 9 a.m. Monday, July 15, at Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery.

Macell was born on September 15, 1924 in Bryan, Texas. She married Clayton A. Mangold on February 1, 1944 in College Station, Texas while he attended Texas A&M University.

Macell's heart was always filled with love for everyone she knew and asked very little in return. Family and friends were her passion and delight. She enjoyed being involved at St. Paul Catholic Church by serving as Treasurer of the Altar Society, a member of the Sewing Circle, and as a Eucharistic Minister, serving the residents at Morningside Manor as well as other homebound parishioners. Macell also enjoyed monthly Bunco parties. When not helping others, she and Clayton were constantly on the go.

They purchased a house on Lake LBJ in 1983 and had many gatherings for family and friends-all will forever treasure those memories. Macell had a unique gift of being the family historian as she could remember all of her relatives (and Clayton's) and who was related to whom. Her welcoming spirit was another gift, which the residents cherished at the Madison Estates Retirement Community-her last residence.

Macell had a genuine love for reading and playing cards-that was her life! She was the Chairperson of both the Resident Welcoming and the Resident Activity committees for several years. Her loving heart was instrumental in helping the new residents feel a part of the Madison family.

She always wanted the best for her children and strived to make that possible. Macell and Clayton were married for 63 years and raised four children. She is survived by children Judy (Terry, deceased) Breaux, Gary (Judy) Mangold, Donna Faye (Bill) Russell, and LaNell (Brad) Day. Survivors also include her sister-in-law, Hertha Burkhalter of Bryan, TX; 6 grandchildren; 4 great-granddaughters; 1 nephew; 2 nieces; and 3 great-nieces.

Macell was preceded in death by her parents, Ira and Pearl (Warren) Burkhalter; husband, Clayton A. Mangold; and brother, Chester Burkhalter.
