C. R. Deal Jr., a long-time resident of Hearne, passed away at his home on July 26, 2013. Mr. Deal was born in Gustine, Texas on February 5, 1920 and was 93 years, 5 months, and 21 days of age. As a teenager, he moved with his family to the Maysfield area. There he met the love of his life, Anice Lucille Smith, and they were married on September 28, 1940. They moved to the Brazos bottom to start their family. In 1945, C. R. joined the United States Navy as a Seabee in the 23rd Construction Battalion and helped to rebuild the runways and roads on the Island of Guam. After his return from his Navy duties, he owned and operated a retail repair shop for autos, trucks, tractors and any other mechanical equipment that needed refurbishing. In the late 1950s, he learned to fly and became a very accomplished pilot, working for many years for Corpora Aerial Service. During the off-season, he repaired and refurbished watches and antique clocks.

C. R. was an avid hunter and fisherman and regaled his family regularly with tales of those sporting ventures, encouraging his children and grandchildren to join him during any hunting or fishing season. He was also an accomplished musician, playing guitar, mandolin, and harmonica. He loved nothing better than a good game of dominoes or poker and passed on his skill at dominoes to at least one of his grandsons. C. R. was also a passionate Texas Rangers fan and loved watching games with his family.

He was preceded in death by a son, Marvin Leon; his wife of 51 years, Anice Lucille, and second wife, Vonzile O'Herron Deal. He leaves behind a large and loving family, his children, Shirey Ellis and husband, Ernest; Patricia Campbell and husband, Leslie; Renne Deal and wife, Paula; step-children, Leo Jaque and wife, Jean; Sandie Middleton and husband, Tommy; Susie Reeder and husband, Jimmy; and CarolAnn Webb and husband, Clydedale. Mr. Deal is survived by 7 grandchildren, 12 step-grandchildren; 9 great-grandchildren; 23 step-great-grandchildren; and 8 great-great-grandchildren. He is also survived by four sisters-in-law, Faye Russell, Martha Gage, Juanita Smith, and Daisy Patterson and many, many loving nieces and nephews. He made a lasting impression on everyone he came in contact with and he will be sorely missed.

Visitation is set for Monday, July 29, 2013 from 5:00 - 8:00 p.m. at Heartfield-Ritter Funeral Home, with funeral services set for Tuesday, July 30, at 10:30 a.m. at First Baptist Church, 105 W. Davis St. in Hearne.
