Rafael Nieto Sr., 92, of Rockdale, passed away on Saturday, July 27, 2013 in the Central Texas Veterans Hospital in Temple. Services for are set 11 a.m. Tuesday, July 30 at the Phillips & Luckey Funeral Home in Rockdale. Visitation will be from 6 to 9 p.m. Monday July 29, at the funeral home.




He was born on June 21, 1921, in Rockdale, the son of Evaristo and Juanita (Almazan) Nieto. Rafael and Florence Garza were married on April 12, 1947 in Rockdale. Mr. Nieto has lived in Rockdale since 1992, when he returned from Bryan where he lived from 1950 to 1992. While living in Bryan, he was a mechanics helper for International Harvester Farm Equipment. He served in the U.S. Army during WWII, where he was awarded the Purple Heart, Bronze Star, Victory Medal, European-Asian-Middle Eastern Campaign Ribbon with two Bronze Stars, American Defense Service with a Bronze Star and Asiatic-Pacific Campaign Medal with a Bronze Star and the Combat Infantry Badge.




He is preceded in death by his parents; two daughters, Rebecca Nieto and Florence Nieto; a brother and three sisters.




He is survived by his wife Florence Nieto of Rockdale; sons, Rafael Nieto, Jr. of Bryan, Frank Nieto of San Antonio, Reuben Nieto of Rockdale, Jonathan Nieto of Bryan and Joseph Nieto of Rockdale; daughter, Rosemary Nieto of Rockdale, 11 grandchildren; Rafael III, Sonia, Roseanna, Amber, Corey, Reuben Jr., Leah, Lauren, Julianna, Sophia and Sarah Nieto; and three great-grandchildren, Adrian, Kobe and Maykala Nieto.
