May 29, 1932 - Sept. 1, 2013

W.A. Jack Baker, 81, of Bryan, died peacefully on Sunday, September 1, 2013 at home, surrounded by his family. Jack was born in Lampasas County, Texas, May 29, 1932. He graduated from Lampasas High School in 1949 and earned a Bachelor of Science degree from Southwest Texas State Teacher College in 1953. He enlisted into the Naval Cadets in 1953 and was voted class officer. On June 4, 1954, he married his college sweetheart, Bertha Pruitt.

Jack enjoyed many hobbies in his life. He had a love of antique and classic cars that began while he was in high school and remained a passion throughout his life. Ranching played a major role in his life; an experience that he shared with his family. Jack spent years developing improved pastures, raising Charolais cattle and riding horses. In later years, Jack enjoyed motor-homing and snowmobiling.

Jack was most proud of the family he and Bert raised. They were blessed with two daughters, Karee Griffith and Janice Baker both of College Station; four grandchildren, Jennifer Griffith of College Station, Daniel Griffith and wife, Megan, of Fort Collins, Colo., Rebecca Baker of Firestone, Colo., and Jeremy Baker of Fort Collins, Colo.; three great-grandchildren, Jenny Griffith, Jocelyn Griffith and Ayden Baker. Also surviving are Jack's two brothers, Audrey Baker of Huntsville and Aubrey Baker of Liberty Hill and numerous nieces and nephews.

The family thanks the many friends who have offered prayers and support during this time. We would like to thank Dr. David Hackethorn for his years of compassionate care and the wonderful caregivers of Hospice Brazos Valley notably, Andrea, Sam and Linda. As well as a special thank you to Oneida Avila for her loving care and support.

A memorial service will be held Friday, September 20, 2:30 p.m. at A&M United Methodist Church. In lieu of flowers, please make memorial contributions to A&M United Methodist Church, Hospice Brazos Valley, or the Wounded Warrior Project.
