Services for Opal Avis (Kirkland) Goodson, age 93, of Caldwell, Texas, are set for 11:00 a.m., Monday, September 16, 2013, at Strickland Funeral Home in Caldwell. Officiating will be Rev. Steve Johnson, Pastor of First Baptist Church in Caldwell. Interment will follow at the Masonic Cemetery in Caldwell. A visitation will be held on Sunday from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m., at the funeral home. Mrs. Goodson passed from this world on September 12, 2013.
Opal was born December 6, 1919, in Woodville, Tyler County, Texas, to Benjamin Russell and Evie Mae (Tubbe) Kirkland. She graduated from Devers High School in Devers, Texas; she was the valedictorian of her class. On October 25, 1941, she married Jesse Floyd Goodson at the First Baptist Church in Galena Park, Texas. They were happily married for 67 years. They were blessed with three children, Jesse Jr. born in 1945, Stephanie, in 1950, and Debra, in 1954. Opal was predeceased by her beloved husband, as well as by one of her three sisters, Bernice Adams, and her only brother, Cecil Kirkland.
After relocating with her husband in 1973 from Houston to Caldwell, Opal for many years was active in the First Baptist Church in Caldwell, as well as in several other local community organizations. In 1974, she was affiliated by transfer with Caldwell Chapter 976, Order of the Eastern Star. She served as the Chapter's Worthy Matron in 1978 and 1979, and then again in 1983 and 1984. In 1977, she was named as an Honorary Member of the Caldwell Chamber of Commerce. Opal was a charter member of the Creative Memories Quilt Guild. She was also a charter member of the Ladies' Oriental Shrine, Ben Hera Court #91. And last, but not least, she enjoyed her bridge club.
Opal wished to thank the staff and residents of Copperas Hollow Assisted Living in Caldwell for their loving kindness.
Survivors include her son, Jesse Goodson, Jr., of Houston; daughter, Stephanie Perry of Austin, Debra Eno of Houston, sister Audrey Parker of Sugarland, and sister Nora Lee Ladd of Devers. Opal was extremely proud of her seven grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren. She will be greatly missed by her family and friends.
