John Matthews, 81, entered into rest on September 25, 2013 at his residence in College Station. Visitation will be from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m., Friday, September 27, 2013 at Memorial Funeral Chapel in College Station.




The funeral service is scheduled for 3:30 p.m., Saturday, September 28, 2013 at Memorial Funeral Chapel in College Station, with Rev. Jerry House officiating. Interment will follow at Wellborn Cemetery with full military honors.




John was born February 19, 1932 in Dallas, Texas the son of David and Jennie (Mulliniks) Matthews. He retired from the Air Force in 1970 after 21 years of service. Among the awards he received were the Air Force Commendation Medal, Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal, Vietnam Service Medal, Air Force Good Conduct Medal and the Air Force Longevity Service Award.




John was a charter member of Christ United Methodist Church, the VFW, and Post 4692 in Bryan. He was an avid fisherman, enjoyed bowling, playing cards (especially Pinochle) and living on the horse ranch.




Survivors include his wife Helen (Babovec) Matthews; three children, Nancy Magnussen & her husband Walt, Mike Matthews & wife Mary, John Dennis Matthews & wife Carolyn; sister, Carolyn Howard & husband Phil; seven grandchildren, sixteen great grandchildren, one niece and three nephews.
